The 7th "WIPO-Tongji International Intellectual Property Forum" was successfully held at Tongji University in Shanghai from June 28-29, 2024. The forum was co-hosted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Tongji University, and organized by the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property at Tongji University. Director of Bluetech Clean Air Alliance (BCAA) and National Coordinator of the WIPO GREEN China City Acceleration Project, Tonny Xie, was invited to attend and delivered a keynote speech at the forum.
Currently, the world faces increasingly severe environmental challenges and pressures for sustainable development. Green innovation is considered one of the keys to driving economic growth and promoting social progress, and the role of intellectual property in incentivizing green innovation is becoming increasingly prominent. This forum aimed to explore the role of intellectual property in the design and management practices of green innovation systems. Experts and scholars from various countries shared their latest research findings and experiences in this field and promoted international cooperation and exchange.
Guests attending this International Intellectual Property Forum included Xu Xuejun, Vice President of Tongji University; Shan Xiaoguang, Dean of the Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property at Tongji University; Tonny Xie, Director of BCAA; Marcus Holgersson, Professor at Chalmers University of Technology; Ni Shoubin, Professor at Tongji University; Kazuyuki Motohashi, Professor at the University of Tokyo; Dirk Meissner, Professor at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Russia; and Zhou Yuan, Professor at Tsinghua University.
In his speech, Tonny Xie, Director of BCAA and National Coordinator of the WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project, stated that the BCAA has collaborated with WIPO GREEN to launch the WIPO GREEN China City Acceleration Project. With the support of the Beijing Intellectual Property Office and the WIPO China Office, Beijing became the first global city pilot for the WIPO GREEN acceleration project in 2021. Over two years of operation, the Beijing pilot has achieved a series of results, including conducting key green technology needs assessments and identifying carbon dioxide emission reduction, air pollution, and urban waste as urgent priority areas. Over 100 green technologies and 24 needs have been collected, dozens of matching activities have been organized, and three projects have been successfully matched. Additionally, various acceleration activities have been organized in Beijing, including IP strategy training for green technology enterprises, hydrogen industry research, and Bluetech Carbon Neutrality Pioneers Award evaluation. The results of the Beijing pilot have been included in the WIPO GREEN Annual Progress Report, and the demonstration projects have been recognized and showcased at events such as the United Nations Climate Conference, Zhongguancun Forum, Boao Forum, and WIPO GREEN 10th Anniversary Celebration.
This forum attracted scholars from around the world and provided a platform for in-depth discussion and knowledge exchange through various keynote speeches and interactive seminars. Experts from academia and industry shared their insights on cutting-edge topics such as intellectual property knowledge supporting sustainable development, corporate green innovation strategies, and the commercialization of green technologies. The complex relationship between intellectual property and green innovation was thoroughly explored.
