The 20th annual meeting of the Long-range Transboundary Air Pollutants (LTP) in Northeast Asia opened on October 11 in Busan, South Korea, said the country's Ministry of Environment on Tuesday.
With the participation of experts from China, Japan and South Korea, the three-day meeting will focus on air pollution control in Northeast Asia.
Initiated by South Korea, the meeting has been held annually by the three countries since 1995. So far, the LTP project has completed three stages of joint research.
Entering the fourth stage in 2013, the LTP project now puts its research emphasis on the cross-boundary impact of the haze.
Experts will discuss the compilation of a comprehensive assessment report and policymakers' summary of the major results achieved in the fourth stage of research.
At the 19th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting between South Korea, China and Japan held in August, the three countries had already reached consensus to share the research results of Northeast Asia's air pollutants studies and further step up the trilateral cooperation.
Long-range air pollutants have become a serious issue in Northeast Asia as air quality has worsened in the region.
South Korean newspaper Choson Ilbo previously alleged smog from China the "new influx of toxic haze" that blanketed the western island of Baengnyeong at the weekend.
An emission database on the concentration of air pollutants and distribution of deposits in Northeast Asia has been developed under the efforts of the project. A modeling inter-comparison study was also conducted among the member countries to produce quantitative outputs.
